General Contractor Requirements

Obtaining a General Contractor License in Florida

Below is a breakdown of the experience requirements:

* 4 years of project time as a W2 employee of a licensed Building Contractor (unless you worked in a state that did/does not require a license):
     * Can substitute up to 3 years of college credits from an accredited college.
     * College credits do not have to be construction related!
* At least 1 year of project time needs to be commercial New Construction on a project 4-stories or higher.
* Time is calculated by the date of the project, beginning of project to completion:
     * Example: project date 02/2021 – 04/2022 = 1 year 2 months project time.
     * Be careful of projects that overlap on time, you only get credit for time once!
* Check off at least 4 of the 6 experience area boxes:
     * Foundation/slabs over 20,000 sq ft.
          * If the total square footage of your project is not over 20,000 sq ft, you cannot check off foundation/slabs!
     * Masonry walls.
     * Column erection.
     * Steel erection.
     * Formwork.
     * Elevated slabs.
* Only list 1 project per experience page (do not say “multiple/various projects”, this is not acceptable!
* Number of stories, square footage, materials used & description of work performed.

Building Contractor Requirements

Obtaining a Building Contractor License in Florida

Below is a breakdown of the experience requirements:

* 4 years of project time as a W2 employee of a licensed Building Contractor (unless you worked in a state that did/does not require a license):
     * Can substitute up to 3 years of college credits from an accredited college.
     * College credits do not have to be construction related!
* Commercial New Construction Projects.
* Time is calculated by the date of the project, beginning of project to completion:
     * Example: project date 02/2021 – 04/2022 = 1 year 2 months project time.
     * Be careful of projects that overlap on time, you only get credit for time once!
* Check off at least 4 of the 6 experience area boxes:
     * Foundation/slabs over 20,000 sq ft.
          * If the total square footage of your project is not over 20,000 sq ft, you cannot check off foundation/slabs!
     * Masonry walls.
     * Column erection.
     * Steel erection.

     * Elevated slabs.

* 4 years of project time as a W2 employee of a licensed General, Building or Residential contractor (unless you worked in a state that did/does not require a license):
     * Can substitute up to 3 years of college credits from an accredited school.
     * College credits do not have to be construction related!
* Time is calculated by the date of the project, beginning of project to completion:
     * Example…project date 02/2021 – 04/2022 = 1 year 2 months project time.
     * Be careful of projects that overlap on time, you only get credit for time once!
* Need to be able to check off at least 3 of the 5 experience area boxes:
     * Foundation/slabs/structural formwork.
     * Masonry walls.
     * Structural demolition.
     * Column erection.
     * Structural wood framing.
* Only list 1 project per experience page (do not say “multiple/various projects”, this is not acceptable!
* Number of stories, square footage, materials used & description of work performed.
